BEZALEL ACADEMY OF ARTS AND DESIGN, JERUSALEM PRESENTS FASHION EXHIBITION:
EXHIBIT TO FEATURE 55 EXTRAVAGANT SHOE DESIGNS EXPLORING INTERSECTION OF ART AND FASHION
SAN FRANCISCO—With the success of its early 2017 U.S. debut, the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem will bring its exclusive exhibition, “Walk of Art: Visionary Shoes,” to San Francisco this November. The exhibition explores the art and cult-following of women’s shoes, and will run from Nov. 7-21, 2017. There will be an opening reception on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017 at 6:30 p.m.
Presented at refusalon Gallery located at 246 Powell St., the exhibition will feature more than 55 contemporary designs, all created by the distinguished alumni and students of the Jerusalem-based academy. The innovative and radical designs explore unconventional sculptural techniques that aim to defy space, anatomy and gravity with the blend of traditional craft and nontraditional materials.
“Shoes are objects that have an almost mystical ability to instantly rivet us,” said curator Ya’ara Keydar. “The Walk of Art: Visionary Shoes” is an exploration of the charged history, iconic shapes and mystery that so often surrounds shoes through the lens of burgeoning Israeli designers and alumni of the Bezalel. The success of our U.S. launch led to multiple requests and we are pleased that San Francisco, and in specific such a prestigious gallery, will be our next host.”
The art interpretation explores the artists’ design in footwear using porcelain, glass, metal, wood, to futuristic 3D printed shoes, impossible platforms, wedges, and heels. This exhibition creates a thoughtful journey between the ephemeral and the perennial, the beautiful and the painful, the mythology and reality of some of the most charged and coveted objects in fashion history.
“Walk of Art is an exhibition that embodies the spirit of Bezalel through its fusion of art and fashion. We are excited to see our talented students and acclaimed alumni explore the complex and fascinating social history and evolution of shoe design,” said Bezalel’s President Prof. Adi Stern. “The success of our exhibition in New York earlier this year, led to various requests for the exhibit to travel and we are thrilled that San Francisco, a city well known as a worldwide Arts and Culture destination, will be its next stop.”
